Each day in a month at 22°14’N 114°09’E

These 30 pieces of hibernated yeast samples resulted from Deep Food’s attempts to make an edible archive of weather over time.

The documentation process began with a “starter”, which is a small mixture – in this case, water, flour and natural yeast – that has the sole purpose of growing more yeast cells. Then, every day during a month, the designer, in the studio – which is positioned at “22°14’N 114°09’E – observes and archives how yeast samples react to the changing temperature and humidity of the environment: how they tend to become larger and ‘livelier’ at higher temperatures. The yeast samples became a daily record of weather, hibernated by drying, and thus archived for future retrieval until they awake again when mixed with water. This experiment aimed to find out the effect of temperature on living organisms and then store the yeast and see whether it can actually become its own archive, recording information as it lives, before the designer transformed the yeast into something different in the future.

Yeast was chosen as the material for this experiment because it’s edible and reactive to the environment, and it can be stored for a long time, allowing people to revisit and reconnect with a specific time and space in an array of multisensory ways.”
